The use of marijuana to ease the pains of patients is well known, but up until recently the dosage of the active ingredient that enters the body could not easily be regulated. Now, a new Israeli development provides a solution to the problem: an advanced inhaler called Syqe.
For 20 years now, David (Dudu) has been suffering from severe pains, the result of an injury he sustained during the Lebanon War, which left him a disabled IDF veteran. The narcotic drugs he used to take to ease the pain didn’t really help and left him apathetic, confused and dysfunctional, but recently he started a new type of treatment at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, as a part of which patients like him receive medical marijuana through a sophisticated inhaler called a Syqe.
The special inhaler is an innovative invention, developed by an Israeli startup called Syqe Medical over four years and costing almost 150 million shekels. The inhaler came into regular use at Rambam ten months ago following a successful three-year trial period. The patients use the Syqe like a normal inhaler, and within 30 seconds of inhaling, they start feeling the effects of the marijuana plant.
The advantage of using such an inhaler is that every inhalation takes in a similar amount of the active ingredient, which solves the biggest problem with marijuana when taken in an any other form: it is impossible to known how much of the active ingredient is inhaled, as there are different types of marijuana with different concentrations and patients differ from one another in the strength of their inhalation…
