Women of the Wall leader arrested at Western Wall
Lesley Sachs, the Executive Director of Women of the Wall prayer rights organization was arrested this morning (Tuesday) at the Western Wall for bringing a Torah scroll into the site, which is against regulations, and reading from it.
This is the first time in three years that a woman participating in the Women of the Wall prayer group has been arrested.
Before a landmark ruling in 2013, women participating in the organization’s monthly prayers were routinely arrested for wearing prayer shawls and tefillin, something which was deemed as contravening the local custom practiced at the site.
According to WOW, Sachs was detained for questioning by the police for a breach of the public order. There were approximately 80 women praying together at the time which passed off smoothly, a spokeswoman for the group said.
